Ricketts Spotlights Growing Threat to Israel Amid Lebanon’s Uncertain Future

May 18, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing to confirm the U.S. ambassador to the Lebanese Republic earlier this week, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) highlighted the growing threat to Israel from Iranian-backed Palestinian militants operating in Lebanon. Ricketts also expressed his concerns about the presidential vacuum in Lebanon and Iran’s ongoing efforts to support their preferred candidate.

“Earlier this year, I saw firsthand the threat Israel faces at its border from Iran-backed proxies in Lebanon,” said Ricketts after the hearing. “The whole world saw the threat when, during Passover in early April, Israel endured the largest rocket attack coming from Lebanon since the Lebanese War in 2006. It is essential the Biden administration works shoulder-to-shoulder with our ally, Israel, to stop the flow of Iranian weapons to terrorist groups in Lebanon, which are being used to attack innocent Israelis.”

The hearing also included nominees to serve as ambassadors to the Sultanate of Oman, Ethiopia, Uganda and Sierra Leone.
