Ricketts, Hassan Introduce the Improving Measurements for Loneliness and Isolation Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Pete Ricketts (R-NE) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) introduced the Improving Measurements for Loneliness and Isolation Act, legislation that would create a federal working group to standardize how loneliness and social isolation are measured nationwide.
“No Nebraskan should feel alone during the holidays, or any time of year,” said Senator Ricketts. “Families are more spread out. Digital connections can’t replace face-to-face relationships. This legislation will give us the tools to better understand loneliness and strengthen communities. Every Nebraskan and American should feel supported.”
“Americans should have support as they face challenges such as loneliness and isolation, which can have devastating impacts on mental wellbeing,” said Senator Hassan. “This bill will help to bring uniformity to reporting measurements for loneliness and isolation so we can ensure that the federal government is best informed and individuals are able to get the support that they need.”
BACKGROUND
Americans of all ages are becoming more isolated and disconnected—posing increased threats to their mental and physical health. Over four decades of research has produced robust evidence that loneliness and isolation are associated with a significantly heightened risk for early death from all causes. Furthermore, the negative health outcomes associated with loneliness and isolation can contribute to preventable healthcare costs.
To address this challenge, the Improving Measurements for Loneliness and Isolation Act calls on the Secretary of Health and Human Services to convene a working group of experts and stakeholders to provide recommendations for standardizing the measurements and definitions of loneliness and isolation—unifying private and public efforts to study, understand, and combat them.
Congressman Mike Flood (R-NE) and Congressman Ami Bera (D-CA) led this legislation in the House of Representatives earlier this Congress.
This legislation is supported by the American Association of Suicidology, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and Coalition to End Social Isolation and Loneliness.Bill text can be found here.
